Karen Cunningham, Owner & Interior Designer
Karen has an natural love of beauty that radiates through her presence. She has a keen ability to immediately see what can be changed to transform a room and create balance in your home. This gift for envisioning spaces allows her to meticulously pick the right fabrics, furniture and decor. Her work prioritizes comfort as well as aesthetic. One need not be sacrificed for the other.
She always dreamed of owning a store, where she could be creative and share her passions. She has an affinity for European homes and styles and is a great supporter for local art, all of which can be seen throughout Spruce. Karen’s greatest joy is the friendships made and the smiles on client’s faces when they have finally made their houses into homes.
Karen is grateful to have her daughter Meagen managing the store and working as an extension of herself assisting with design. Meagen adds a level of expertise with color and organization, and offers a happy smile when she greets you at the store.
What is your favorite space in your home?
My favorite room is probably my sitting room. I love being in there when I have an opportunity to relax and read a book or chat on the phone. Always with a wonderful smelling candle burning.
Bonus thought…
Another way I often relax is by working in my garden. I love sitting on my porch with a glass of wine in the evening and enjoying all the flowers that I have planted there.

What colors are you drawn to?
My home has more of a neutral soft pallet, blending blues, browns, a little green and pops of coral and yellow.
What is your personal home decor style?
My personal style is French country. I have a mixture of fabrics, with lots of books, baskets and treasured small items that I got in France.

After her mom’s passing, Karen chased her dream and opened her first store in West Columbia, SC. She moved to Spartanburg in 2020 and reestablished herself within Spruce Curated Interiors.

What colors are you drawn to?
I like bold jewel tone colors – blue, turquoise, emerald green, pink and orange – all intertwined.
What is your personal home decor style?
I would describe my personal style as bohemian. I love to mix different patterns with my fabrics and use lots of bold colors for a whimsical finish. I love artwork with bright, cheery florals.
What is your favorite space in your home?
My favorite space is my open downstairs which combines my dining, kitchen and living room. It’s where I’ve concentrated my decorating and has the most color!
What is your favorite item in that space?
I have moved my grandmother’s Dixie Cabaret kitchen hutch to lots of different places, but I have repurposed it into a bar, giving this vintage piece a modern twist.

What colors are you drawn to?
I love a palette inspired by nature that connects interior and exterior spaces. Layers of green, brown and blue are always pleasing.
What is your personal home decor style?
Your home should tell a story. My style is an eclectic but timeless mix of antiques, collected treasures and contemporary touches that balance each other to create a welcoming atmosphere.
What is your favorite space in your home?
The front porch of my 1921 bungalow is pure joy. I don’t hesitate to layer in pieces normally reserved for indoors like blue and white chinoiserie pottery and Thibaut pillows.
What is your favorite item in that space?
A pair of vintage wicker chairs that once lived in my mother’s sunroom.

What colors are you drawn to?
Many blues and greens.
What is your personal home decor style?
Traditional with modern touches. I like mixing my antiques with bolder patterns on pillows and chairs and a few modern styled pieces.
Favorite space in your home?
The small sitting room off of my kitchen with a cozy fireplace.
Favorite item in that space?
My Bergere’ chair and ottoman with the pink striped frog fabric.

Blues and greens.
What is your personal home decor style?
My personal style is traditional. I lean toward a neutral palette with pops of color in pillows and art.
Favorite space in your home?
The Great Room. I love looking out the French doors into the back yard. I enjoy the birds and whatever is blooming.
Favorite item in that space?
My favorite piece in this room is a Wright Table that served as a dining table in a beach house. I have very fond memories shared with friends enjoying a good meal, wine and lots of laughter. In later years, the legs were cut down and it is now a coffee table. I absolutely adore it!

I’m always drawn to shades of green!
What is your personal home decor style?
My home is very traditional, filled with antiques collected over the years. Many are family heirlooms. My mother was an antique dealer in Spartanburg, so many of the beautiful pieces in my home have been passed down from her.
Favorite space in your home?
Because each room offers something different, that is just too hard to choose!

There is something favorite in each room, a memory that means so very much to me.

Katie MacGregor is right at home in the basement studio. She’s been specifically devoted to her craft over the last eight years, and loves to paint florals, coastal scenes, abstracts and portraits.
